Google Ads manager accounts

Comparison

Manager account or client account?

A client account runs campaigns, holds spend history and carries a billing threshold. A manager account runs nothing, holds no history and carries no threshold; it holds other accounts. Almost every mis-sold account in this category comes from blurring those two.

Which should you buy?

Running ads, few accounts

Client accounts only. A manager adds nothing until the count grows.

$30 – $650

Running ads at scale

Both. Client accounts to advertise from, a manager to keep access to them.

Managing other people's accounts

A manager account, and link theirs rather than buying any.

At the twenty-account ceiling

A manager account, now rather than later.

$500

What is the trap?

Being sold a manager account on the strength of history it cannot have. A manager account runs no campaigns, so it accrues no spend and Google never raises a threshold on it. Any listing offering an MCC with spend history, a lifted threshold or a warmed-up profile is describing an advertising account, a misunderstanding, or neither.

The check takes a minute. Open the account and look for campaigns and for Billing, then Transactions. A manager account has no campaign view of its own and no accrued cost to show.

The mirror-image trap is buying an advertising account because someone called it an MCC. What a manager account is sets out what each one actually contains.

Common questions

Can an ordinary Google Ads account be converted into a manager one?

No. A manager account is always created as a new account. There is no upgrade path and no setting inside an existing advertising account that turns it into a manager.

Which one do I actually need to run ads?

A client account. A manager account cannot run campaigns at all, so buying one without any advertising accounts under it leaves you with an organisational shell and nothing to advertise from.

Say what you are running

How many accounts and what daily budget. That is enough to say whether you need a manager account at all.

A private reseller. Accounts here change hands between advertisers; nobody on this site works for Google or for an agency. The Google Ads name and the MCC abbreviation belong to Google LLC, which has no connection to this site and has not reviewed it.

Google alone decides what runs and what stops. No page here describes a way around that, and no price here buys an exception to it.
