How does linking work?
A request goes out to the ten digits printed at the top of the account you want. Somebody holding admin rights on that side says yes, and from that point your manager can work inside it. Anything the manager spun up itself never needs this — it arrives already attached.
Ten digits, usually written with dashes. It identifies the account and nothing else — it is not a password and sharing it grants nobody anything.
A seller who refuses to give the customer ID before payment is refusing the one thing that lets you check anything at all.
What can each side see?
The manager sees the client account's campaigns, data and billing. The client sees none of the manager's other accounts and, in the ordinary case, does not see the manager's own structure at all. This asymmetry is deliberate and it is how agencies keep clients separate.
| Manager sees | Client sees | |
|---|---|---|
| Campaigns and data | yes | its own only |
| Billing | yes | its own only |
| Other accounts under the manager | yes | no |
| Sign-in details of the other side | no | no |
How does unlinking work?
An administrator on the client account can unlink a manager at any time, with or without the manager's agreement. The manager cannot prevent it. If the manager owns the account, unlinking is also how the client ends that ownership — there is no separate button for taking ownership away from above.
Nothing in the account's own history is lost when a manager is unlinked. Spend history, threshold and campaigns belong to the client account and stay with it.
What does this mean when you buy an account?
It means the linked-managers list is part of the account's condition, exactly like its balance. An unexpected manager linked to an account you just bought is not a cosmetic leftover: if it holds ownership, it decides who has access, regardless of what your own admin rights say.
- Open Admin, then Access and securityLook at linked manager accounts, not only at the user list. They are separate things and people check only the first.
- Ask whose any unknown manager isBefore payment. The answer is usually mundane and occasionally decisive.
- Have it unlinked before you payNot after. After is how accounts go back to the person who sold them.
- Link your own manager and take ownershipThen the next person who asks to link gets asked by you.
Common questions
Can a client account be linked to more than one manager?
Yes, linking and ownership are different things. An account can be linked to more than one manager, but it can be owned by only one. Ownership is the exclusive relationship; linking is not.
Can the client see what else is under the same manager?
No. Users on a client account cannot see the manager account or the other accounts linked to it. Worth knowing from both sides: as a buyer you cannot tell from inside an account what else sits under the same manager.
How do I unlink a manager I did not expect to find there?
An administrator on the client account can unlink any manager at any time, without the manager agreeing. If you have just bought an account and find a manager linked to it, this is the first thing to do, not the last.
